Scientists found that women are more likely to buy sexy clothing when they are ovulating. They don't do this just to attract men, but also to stand out from other women.
Researchers at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management say that women will buy sexier garments when thinking about attractive women in their area. Its about standing out from the competition. "We found that, when ovulating, women chose sexier fashion products when thinking about other attractive, local but not distant women," says Kristina Durante, a post doctoral fellow at the Carlson school. It is important that the women be thinking of local women, who are more likely to be competition than a woman that lives a far distance away. "If you are in New York, a woman who lives in LA isn't going to be seen as competition," says Durante.
After looking at pictures of attractive local and distant women, researchers asked the participants to choose which accessories and clothing to purchase. The researchers found that non-ovulating women were not effected and that the choices made were not conscious.
