Barry White: The Voice That Fathered A Million Children

Barry was a great example of this study. He had a famously deep voice and had many children of his own. Science says, as you have guessed, that this is not by accident. After studying the Hadza people of Tanzania, it was found that men with the deepest voices had more children than the men with higher voices. The Hadza are some of the last nomadic tribes that don't use birth control on earth, so that makes them as similar as possible to our ancient ancestors.

The researchers, from the universities of Harvard University, Florida State University and McMaster University in Canada, wanted to see if men with deeper voices had a higher Darwinian fitness (meaning how many children they have) than higher pitched men. While the deeper voiced men did have more children (the man with the deepest had ten children, nine of whom were still alive) than the higher pitched men (the highest pitched had three children, of which one was alive), the children were all of nearly the same health quality.

The researchers said that the deeper voiced men are not necessarily more healthy than others, but may have more access to women. Both men and women in the tribe were asked to say the word "hujambo" (meaning "hello") into a voice recorder and to tell how many children they had and how many were still alive. There was no correlation between women's voices and their Darwinian fitness.
