I Smell Sex and Candy. Mostly Sex.

By far, one of the most frustrating parts of dating someone is finding out if they are into you or not. Do they even know if you like them? Some say yes, they do...but subconsciously.

As with the articles posted in May, the means of pheromone transportation is human sweat. More specifically, sweat produced by men while sexually aroused. Twenty men were asked to stop wearing cologne and deodorant for a few days and wear fresh T-shirts. Sweat was collected from their arm pits as they watched porn. Later, the same men gave sweat samples when they were not sexually aroused.

Nineteen lucky women were asked to smell the T-shirts. A brain scan was performed on the women as they smelled the shirts, to see how their brains reacted to the different sweat. And react differently they did. The sexual sweat activated the women's right orbitofrontal cortex and right fusiform cortex, areas of the brain connected to recognizing emotions and perceiving things. Both areas are involved in emotion and smell recognition.

The study adds credence to the idea that humans communicate subconsciously via chemical pheromones.

Old Men, Healthy Babies

Old men have all the luck. They have the money, they're more attractive to women than teenage men are and now they even have healthier kids. One more reason why I don't miss my teens. I figure if I did get someone pregnant as a teen, I might as well have healthy kids.

I wasnt a drinker or smoker as a teenager, which you would think would better a kid's chance of a long life. New research says that may not be the case. Babies born to a teenage father are 22% more likely to die in the first month of life than babies born to older fathers. They were also 41% more likely to die in the first year.

While men in their twenties have been thought to have the healthiest kids, children born to fathers in their 30's through 60's had no more problems than those who had dads in their 20's. Teen fathers had babies that were 13% more likely to be born underweight and 15% to be born premature.

The study followed 2.6 million newborns over five years, comparing the health of the kids with the age of their fathers. The mothers were all nearly the same age. Possible reasons for the difference in health ranged from teen males producing lower quality sperm to older men being better providers, giving their kids a better start. Still, older men are more likely to have children with Downs Syndrome, while younger father are more likely to have kids with spina bifida.

Men: Bond With Your Women Emotionally, Or Else

You know that you screwed up big time when your wife not only leaves you after years of marriage, but leaves you for another women. See, your stubborn refusal to put down the toilet seat made her swear off men forever. For shame.

I've always heard that women love men that they "know." Emotional closeness seems to be a major factor for female attraction to a partner, of any gender. As a guy, I can kind of see that but not totally. Liking a person is an important part of attraction but it is secondary to physical attraction. At least at first.

Researchers at the University of Utah say that sometimes people fall in love first and then sexual attraction comes later. Researcher Lisa Diamond talked with some lesbian couples whose confused but happy opinions often sounded like "I don't know what's going on, but I love this woman. I've never felt like this before."

The study suggests that these women were not gay before they met their current partner but that their sexuality is fluid. Its possible that the fluidity is caused by the neurobiological pathways in the brain. The pathways that rule sexual attraction are often very similar, if not identical, to the neurobiological pathways for romantic love.

The University of Utah researchers are now looking to discover why some people have a greater sexual fluidity than others. "You can have a whole group of lesbian and gay and bisexual and unlabled individuals in the same room, and they all might be experiencing same-sex attractions for slightly different reasons and in slightly different ways," Diamond says. "Now the puzzle is to figure out why that is and how to explain it developmentally."

Keep in mind, this study only followed 79 women for 15 years. Usually several hundred participants are needed to get a full, accurate picture of how a group behaves. A lot more work needs to be done.

BREAKING NEWS: Men Are Whores

Please have a seat. News from 1982 show women are more selective than men about who they sleep with. See, you needed to sit down first.

It turns out that if a semi attractive college age woman asks a very attractive college age man if he wants to have sex, he says yes 75% of the time. This was found at Florida State University in 1982, when somewhat good looking women propositioned men for sex. The roles were then reversed, and semi good looking men asked very good looking women if they wanted to have sex. The interesting part? NONE of the women said yes. Nada. Zero. Zilch.

This further goes to show that men are always ready for sex. Keep in mind that women most want sex while they are fertile and most likely to get pregnant. Although I am curious what the reasons were for the 25% that declined the women. Were they in a committed relationship? Did they not find the woman attractive? How many of them were gay? How much did religion play a part?

Group Sex: Threes Not a Crowd

Its not for everyone. It can get you fired or arrested in some places. Being in a room getting it on while someone else is getting it on sounds awkward to me. Yet it happens all over the world and apparently, since the dawn of time.

In 2009, a rugby coach and TV personality named Matthew Johns was fired for a "culture of group sex" in his rugby league. College professor, Ma Yaochun, from Nanjing province in China was arrested for committing “the crime of group licentiousness" in 2010.

Americans are uncomfortable with group sex, while Australians have fewer qualms with it. Twenty one percent of Americans have thought about group sex and 14% have done it. As for the Aussies, 46% of women have brought up the idea of an orgy and 54% of men have. Forty percent said they have actually tried it. Of course, the answers came from those on a dating website, so I would think that the answers are suspicious.

A survey from 2007 alleges that even cavemen had sex for fun. Archeologist Timothy Taylor from Bradford University claims that monogamy only became the norm after humans settled into houses, letting gender roles become solidified. Biologist Robin Baker has argued that group sex allows for "sperm wars," letting women decide which males offspring she will give birth to. If she considers two men to be suitable mates, she may sleep with both of them to let the stronger sperm decide. It may also let her gather more resources from more men.

Big Boobs and Bigger IQ's

Meet the lovely and intelligent Marina Orlova, better known on YouTube as HotForWords. A Russian model and philologist living in L.A., she teaches us the background and meaning of everyday words while drawing us in with a little cleavage here and there. "A blond, big boobed model with a brain?!" you ask yourself. "Bollocks!"

In a controversial (but aren't they all?) study, researchers found evidence that women with large breasts are more intelligent than smaller breasted women. The women were divided up into five groups based on boob size. Of the 1,200 women that took part in the study, the largest breasted were found to be the most intelligent. It is theorized that more female hormones could lead to larger breast growth and better brain development.

Look, its an early study and needs a lot more testing. I'm not saying I believe it. I would put more emphasis on, you know, reading and studying to increase intelligence than thinking a woman is smarter because she has larger bras. The study was led by a woman, by the way. No word on what her cup size is.

Cream in the Coffee: The Future of Humanity?

Ah, the race card. Its not like I'm pushing my luck with all of this odd sex talk, I have to put race into the mix. It makes me think of the speech from the 1998 Warren Beatty movie, Bulworth. "White people, black people, brown people, yellow people, get rid of 'em all/ All we need is a voluntary, free spirited, open-ended program of procreative racial deconstruction/ Everybody just gotta keep fuckin' everybody til they're all the same color."

No one is actually saying that a human breeding program needs to be established. That's a little too Third Reich for my taste. Still, science has some interesting things to say about people of mixed racial background. A study released in April of this year found that people of various racial backgrounds are more attractive than "pure bred" individuals. A random sampling of 1,200 white, black and mixed race people found the mixed people perceived to be the best looking.

“A random sample of black, white, and mixed-race faces was collected and rated for their perceived attractiveness. There was a small but highly significant effect, with mixed-race faces, on average, being perceived as more attractive," said Michael Lewis of Britain's Cardiff University.

Here is the science: mutations in a person's DNA can cause disease, making people unattractive. Since mutations tend to be recessive, two parents with the mutations need to mate to create a child with the expressed disease. People of two different races are less likely to carry the same mutated genes, and less likely to have sickly children. The closer in genetic background two people are, the more likely they will have the same genetic defects. This is what is usually called inbreeding.
